Ray Oakes retires
It is said that all good things eventually come to an end, and this can be said about the invaluable services provided by Ray Oakes, Dean of the Evening Division, as he retires after 32 years of service to the school.
Ray’s history with the Sullivan College of Technology and Design began even earlier with his enrollment at Louisville Technical Institute as a Mechanical Engineering Technology student more than four decades ago.
He earned his Associates Degree in 1970.
Originall, he worked as a draftsman and continued to work in the industry for more than 30 years; 26 of them at General Electric.
Ray returned to Louisville Technical Institute first as an instructor teaching Math and Drafting, then became Dean of the Evening Division - a position he has held for the last 25 years.
While he may be heading to Florida to enjoy his retirement, Ray Oakes leaves a lasting impression in Louisville among the faculty and staff members of the college.
“Ray was always about helping students get their education,” said Chancellor AR Sullivan. “He found ways to help them get in school, stay there and finish their degrees.”
Executive Director David Winkler also recognizes the impact Oakes had here.
“We’ll miss his easy way of calming everyone down in a ‘crisis’ and his warm, sneaky sense of humor. I want to thank him for his reliability as Evening Dean and fellowship with faculty and staff members, and I wish him all the best.”
Even with Florida beckoning, Oakes is looking forward to seeing his fellow graduates and current and former staff, including school founder George Dumbaugh at the upcoming Alumni Weekend in November.
Graduates can sign up for the weekend, which is free for graduates and guests, at http://www.sctd.edu/alumni/event/index.asp

SCTD Remains 'Military Friendly'
For the second year in a row, G.I. Jobs recognized the Sullivan College of Technology and Design in its 2011 list of Military Friendly Schools on Monday. The list honors the top 15 percent of colleges, universities and trade schools which are doing the most to embrace America’s veterans as students.
"We are honored to be recognized for our ongoing efforts," said James E. Shane, Jr. Brigadier General, USA (Ret.), newly appointed, Director of Military and Veteran Training and Education Programs at Sullivan. "We have both the commitment and support of Chancellor Sullivan and the entire Executive Staff to strive even further to ensure that our service members, veterans and their families receive an exemplary education which wll support their quality of life."
Sullivan University campuses in Louisville, Lexington and Fort Knox and Spencerian College in Lexington were also named to the list.
Bellarmine Showhouse
Designer showcases often take flights of fancy with soaring spaces. But what can you do with a utilitarian space that virtually every home has, a bathroom?
Design students Mark Conway, Megan Lasher and Meredith Stice show off their ideas at the 2009 Designers’ Show House at the Fleur de Lis on Main, 324 E Main St, Louisville, KY 40202, from Sept. 12-27.
“Our student team really pitched in and did their jobs, and I am proud of them and the end result,” said Terri George, Chairperson of the Interior Design program at the Sullivan College of Technology and Design (SCTD). “Please go see the room, and let the students know what a great job they did.”
Terri also wanted to thank faculty members Nancy Menz and Wayne Whitson, who helped the students manage the effort.
“I wanted everyone to know that this was the easiest, most trouble-free show house I have done, and it is all due to the help that I received,” she said. “Nancy worked with the students to help select the colors and finishes for the space, and Wayne worked closely with the students in securing accessory selections from Drexel Heritage and coordinating other details.”
The 36th Annual Designer’s Show House is open to the public and will run from
Sept. 12 – 27, 2009. This year’s exhibition includes 4 condominiums and features interiors designed by 19 Louisville-area designers. The Sullivan entry is the guest bathroom in Unit 401, the Montpelier.
Advance pre-sale tickets are available at SCTD student services for only $7 each, a $3 savings from other venues. Tickets at the door will be $12.

Kymbra Talley Story
Since Kymbra Talley graduated with her degree in Interior Design, she spends a lot more time in the kitchen…as a designer. Luckily for her, recently opportunities have literally opened up to showcase her kitchen design talent due to the growing popularity of outdoor kitchens.
Kymbra, a Vice President for the Kentuckiana Chapter of the National Kitchen & Bath Association, recently spent the day at the Mellwood Arts Center for what she described as the “coolest National Kitchen & Bath Association Event ever!”
The owner of Kitchens & Baths by Kymbra said she wanted to share her excitement with her friends and clients as the NKBA group showcased new products available for outdoor living.
Visitors could stop by for some free food, cooked outdoors of course, as well as visit vendor booths to learn about the latest and greatest in outdoor kitchen cabinetry, outdoor kitchen appliances, outdoor lighting, tile and countertops.
The former Interior Design Scholastic Award winner has maintained close ties to her school and she encourages both LTI/SCTD alumni and students to join the NKBA. The association, home to over 40,000 industry professionals, offers internships, resource materials, educational conferences, and a multi-level certification program.
The A.A.S Interior Design degree at Sullivan College of Technology and Design is an NKBA Supported Program that has implemented coursework based on NKBA reference materials and is working towards obtaining full NKBA Accreditation. Contact Susan Noel (snoel@sctd.edu) for more information.
The group offers an annual contest with submissions of actual projects from both student and professional NKBA members. Student members may enter the kitchen, bath, or both portions of the competition for a chance to win both recognition and a chance at scholarships. This year’s entries must be postmarked by November 30, 2009.
You can find out more information at the association website at www.nkba.org or by checking out the NKBA Kentuckiana Chapter page on Facebook.

September's SCTD Alumnus of the Month
Sarah Powers has been named the first Alumnus of the Month for the Sullivan College of Technology and Design. Sarah graduated with a degree in Computer Graphic Design in March 2005. In addition to the honor, Sarah received a $50 gift certificate to the campus store.
“I've always loved art, and loved playing around with graphic software during my early teenage summers, so I assumed it would be a subject I could grow with in the future,” she noted. “It is an unexpected honor to be recognized as Alumnus of the Month and I'm flattered knowing that I am the first!”
Career Services Director Barbara Moore selected Sarah in part for her recent outstanding interview with her new employer. “"Sarah has been a pleasure to assist, very professional and prepared for new opportunities,” Moore said when she made the announcement.
Powers was recently hired as a graphic designer by The CMOOR Group www.cmoor.com, a company that provides customized educational solutions for the security industry. “Sarah thoroughly impressed the company with her poise, confidence and excellent presentation skills,” said Moore. “The company is speaking to Craig Niemann’s Portfolio class later in the month regarding presentation skills as Sarah really wowed them with hers.”
Powers will be the CMOOR Group’s Media Designer and will coordinate with the Chief Learning Officer and Instructional Designers to create layouts, media development and exercises for security companies.
While she enjoyed most of my classes, Sarah Powers did credit two of her instructors with giving her an edge for her new position. She credits Tom Willis with helping to increase her web knowledge and both Willis and Craig Niemann “for making learning a lot more interesting and easy.”
When asked about her favorite memory of school she said: “I would have to say working on either my Freehand car illustration or cd package project. These projects took some time, but were well worth it and helped me become more familiar with Photoshop and Freehand. They made a great addition to my portfolio.”
She also has some hard-won advice for others looking to move up in their career. “You can always take some time out to brush up on your portfolio. I waited 4 years after being in one place to start redoing mine,” she said. “But it would be a whole lot easier and less stressful if I would have taken some time out before looking for another job to do so.”
Sarah was asked if she had a favorite quote or saying that has motivated her over the years.
“Remember, looking at design is not making design." - Frank Chimero.
“I often find myself slipping into the excitement of motivation rather than actually creating something after consuming,” she said. “Ask for critiques from your peers. You can't be too shy or vain when it comes to art, because you could always use some sort of improvement or touch-up to make your pieces better.”
Congratulations to Sarah!
